During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle (from the first day of menses through ovulation), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the maturation of a follicle containing an immature egg.

During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle (from the first day of menses through ovulation), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the maturation of a follicle containing an immature egg. This leads to an increase in estrogen and thickening of the endometrium to prepare for potential implantation of a fertilized egg.
