Children understand the concept of death in different ways based on their developmental stages. A preschooler may exhibit magical thinking (believing their thoughts or actions caused the death) and could exhibit regression such as bedwetting in a toilet trained child. A school age child is likely to understand the permanence of death around 6 years old.
