Clostridioides difficile is a Gram-positive bacterium that can cause a C. diff infection. This bacterium was previously known as Clostridium difficile. It is a rod-shaped bacterium that produces endospores, which are shed in the stool. And items that are contaminated with feces can become a reservoir for C. diff spores. This bacterium is an obligate anaerobe, which means it cannot survive in the presence of oxygen. And it produces exotoxins, including toxin A and B, which cause damage to the intestines.
