Borrelia burgdorferi is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes Lyme disease, which is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. This bacterium is a spirochete, meaning it has a corkscrew shape. It is mobile using internal flagella, and it is microaerophilic, meaning it grows best at low levels of oxygen. This bacterium is spread through the bite of an infected tick.
